This stunning photograph captures the monument under a star trail sky a perfect tribute to Ulverston's enduring history and natural beauty.

The timeless beauty of Ulverston's iconic Monument, affectionately known as Hoad Monument.

Built in 1850 through public subscription to honour Sir John Barrow, it stands as a cherished symbol of the town.

Rising from the 450 ft summit of Hoad Hill, this Grade II* listed monument is crafted from limestone sourced from Birkrigg Common.

Modelled after John Smeaton's 1759 Eddystone Lighthouse, the 100 ft structure features an internal spiral staircase of 112 steps

leading to the lantern chamber, which was never intended to house a functional light.

On 15 May 1850, Sir John Barrow’s sons, Sir George Barrow and John Barrow,

laid the foundation stone in a historic ceremony attended by 8,000 people. Completed on 9 January 1851,

the monument remains a beacon of local heritage, visible for miles around.
